DOT4 low viscosity meets the maximum 750mm2/s viscosity level at -40°C
DOT which classifies brake fluid stands for DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION(US). When Brake Pedal is pressed hydraulic force is applied to the brakes which stops the car. If the brake fluid heats up above the permissible limit it will boil causing steam locks which will cause brake failure, therefore special brake fluids are used in hydraulic systems. Brake Fluids are given DOT ratings based on following factors
- MOISTURE RESISTANCE
- HEAT RESISTANCE
- VISCOSITY (+100°C & -40°C)
All Manufacturer will state which Brake Fluid to use in the Car Manuals, it is advisable to use Manufacturer recommendation while it is possible to move to higher performing Brake Fluid e.g from DOT4 to DOT5.1 but not advisable to mix different brands fluids because some chemicals might not be compatible.
